The rural Scout Camp at Corf, near Shalfleet, is hoping to set up it’s own Men’s Shed to help with the ongoing maintenance of the site.

Age UK IOW was recently approached by the Isle of Wight Scouts to see if a shed could be established at their camp.

Lois Prior, Men in Sheds Coordinator at Age UK IOW could see the potential:

“A lot of men have links with the scouting movement. Maybe they are former scouts or leaders or there may be members of their family who are currently Scouts. Corf Camp is a familiar place for most island Scouts and is such a tranquil spot.

“I think a lot of people would love to give something back to the Scouts but are put off by the thought of being involved with committees or the Scouts themselves, which isn’t everyone’s preference. Being part of the Men’s Shed movement at Corf will provide the men with the opportunity to give something back in a very practical way, as well as working as part of a team in an amazing place”.

An open day is to be held on Monday (22nd May) from 10:00 to 13:00 to give prospective shed men the opportunity to meet some of the people who already work on site and to see what is involved. There will also be food cooked on a camp fire (weather permitting).

Corf Scout Camp is located on the Corf Road, Shalfleet (postcode PO30 4NT). You can just turn up on the day, or if you would like more information, get in touch with Lois on 01983 525282 or email

Men’s Shed is part of the Age Friendly Island initiative, an exciting partnership funded by the National Lottery through the BIG Lottery fund, making the Isle of Wight a great place to grow old while tackling social isolation. Encouraging older adults to take an active role in their communities, and enabling their voices to be heard.
