UPDATED: HM Coastguard and Hampshire Constabulary are conducting a search of Culver Down in horrendous weather conditions this morning (Tuesday).
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team and a number of Police units are located at the top of the down, near to Sandown.
It remains unclear what has sparked the multi-agency search but it is thought to be a search for a missing person.
Driving rain and strong winds are making search conditions difficult.
UPDATE @ 11:19 – Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team and Coastguard Rescue helicopter 175 have now joined the search and rescue efforts, as have more Police officers from across the Island.
WightSAR, the Island’s search and rescue team, have now been deployed to the incident.
UPDATE @ 11:52 – Multiple resources are on scene at both Culver and Yaverland with extensive searches being carried out in the area.
It has been confirmed that the search is for a missing person – thought to be female.
Culver Down has been closed to motorists.
UPDATE @ 13:04 – Bembridge RNLI’s All Weather Lifeboat has now launched to assist with the ongoing search. Hampshire Constabulary’s Marine Unit is also attending the incident.
UPDATE @ 17:00 – The search for the missing middle-aged woman has been called off and emergency resources are now standing down.
Unfortunately, the individual has not been located despite the extensive efforts.
Island Echo understands that members of the missing person’s family located a car on Culver Down.
2 vehicles – an Audi estate and a Renault van – have been recovered from a car par by Police.
