BODY RECOVERED FROM CHINE IN THE WEST WIGHT

UPDATED: Police and HM Coastguard have recovered a body from the bottom of a chine off Military Road in the West Wight this afternoon (Friday).

Authorities were alerted to the grim discovery at Chilton Chine between Brook and Brighstone earlier on today, prompting a recovery operation to be launched.

The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team assisted Police in bringing the body to the top of the cliff at around 15:30.

Island Echo understands the deceased was fully clothed upon discovery.

Police are not thought to be treating the death as suspicious.

UPDATE SATURDAY – Police have confirmed that the body discovered at Chilton Chine yesterday is that of a man’s.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:

“We received a call from a member of the public at 1.43pm yesterday following the discovery of a man’s body on the water’s edge at Chilton Chine, in Brighstone.

“We are not able to name the deceased until formal procedures are completed.

“We are not treating the death as suspicious at this time and we are preparing a file for the coroner.”
