UPDATED: Armed Police, including officers from the mainland, have surrounded a property at Downsview in Sandown this afternoon (Friday).

The road has been cordoned off as Hampshire Constabulary deal with the ongoing incident, which centers around a residential address. Officers have been on scene since around 16:00.

It is thought at least 1 person is inside the property in question but it is currently unknown why Police are in attendance.

There is not thought to be any immediate threat to members of the public and no one has been evacuated.

UPDATE @ 17:55 – Armed officers remain on scene this evening, although there have been no further developments.

The cordon has been extended and residents are being prevented from entering the estate.

UPDATE @ 18:23 – Local residents are reporting that they’ve heard officers shouting ‘get down’ in the vicinity of the property in question as officers move in on the address.

The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service have arrived on scene with 1 Ambulance, a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance officer but they remain at the outer cordon on Perowne Way.

UPDATE @ 18:54 – 1 person has been arrested and taken into custody at Newport Police Station following the safe conclusion of the incident.

Island Echo understands that 2 air guns have been recovered from the property, where Police remain this evening.

The incident has attracted 6 Armed Response Officers and 3 Armed Response Vehicles, alongside a number of other Policing resources.

Downsview has now reopened to pedestrians and traffic.
