UPDATED: Armed Police have taken up position on Arthur Street in Ryde this lunchtime (Thursday) as a result of a ongoing incident.

Police have blocked off the road at both ends whilst Armed Response Officers attend to the alert, the details of which remain unclear.

2 officers have located themselves either side of a semi-detached residential property close to the junction with Pellhurst Road.

Hampshire Constabulary deployed the Island’s Armed Response Vehicle to the area shortly before 11:45, closely followed by other local units.

Although residents are being prevented from accessing the street there have been no evacuations.

UPDATE @ 12:48 – Police have now surrounded the property and are preparing to move in on the address.

A number of tools used as methods of entry have been prepared.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:

“Officers are currently carrying out enquiries in Arthur Street in Ryde following a report of concerns for a person’s safety.

“Due to the information provided, it was necessary to close the road to allow officers to attend and make the area safe. These closures are currently in place on the West Street and Pellhurst Road junctions with Arthur Street.

“This appears to be an isolated incident, and officers are still on-scene.”

UPDATE @ 13:03 – Officers have successfully and safely detained a male this afternoon.

The individual, who is thought to be an older gentleman, has been driven away from the scene by Police.

Arthur Street has now re-opened to residents and motorists following the conclusion of the incident.

UPDATE @ 13:57 – Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that a 59-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill.

He has been taken into custody for questioning at Newport Police Station.
